Two Day’s Time
“Vain?” A soft barely hearable Beau tugged the cover further up.
I sat down beside him and ran a hand over his cheek. “I’m here, sleep and rest.”
One eye opened and Beau said, “My mom’s name is Rone?”
“Yes, son.” TeaLeaf said.
Beau’s eye shut and he rolled onto his side. I gave his cheek another peck and then retook my seat with the others. “Two days window isn’t long.”
Sham was still typing away on his computer, but the grin he wore alerted me of his newfound knowledge. “I think I may have an inkling of what occurred during those two days.”
“Do tell.” Jag took hold of TeaLeaf’s hand.
“Thanks to my advances in our computers I can tell our system was breached the day TeaLeaf contacted me with this. I can also tell the intruder piggy backed on his phone call. The number came from Dav Community, but was shut down the next day.”
“How did they attach themselves to my phone?” TeaLeaf grunted. “I never have or will let anyone use my phone.”
“Didn’t have to.” Chief Parker held a small, paper thin square between his thumb and finger. “Nineteen years ago this would let me attach to any network, secure or not. They where rare and costly, aren’t used anymore because I developed an around the clock security system.”
“Which he gives away.” Sham huffed.
“Don’t divert us.” I interjected to head off Sham’s verbiage spill about how no one deserves high-grad technology for free. It was one of the man’s biggest pet peeves.
“Anyone within two miles could’ve tapped into Sham’s system.” Chief Parker flipped the little square. “Once they did they’d have access to everything Sham did via computer, which back then also ran the phones.”
“Damn.” I ran a hand over my face and crossed my legs. “Can you tell who tapped into your system? What they accessed? How long they were inside?”
While Sham dug around in his computer logs, I worked out other possible scenarios of what went down during those two days. There were a few options that stood out, but one screamed at my Blood Hound side.
“Here’s what I can see happening.” TeaLeaf, Jag, and Chief Parker’s heads swiveled my way. “The real Chief Parker, found someone he knew was loyal to take his place.” I looked at TeaLeaf. “I’m assuming you told him people would be intouch with him.”
TeaLeaf nodded and said, “Do you really think he could plan such an elaborate switch in two days? I just don’t’ see that. Then someone tapped into my phone. Did he do it, if so did he just happen to have the right device laying around? How did he even know I would be coming to find Beau? No one knew I was free besides the Spirit Council.”
“I’m sure the Spirit Council alerted him the moment you reported to them.” I hated thinking such, but Jag, Sham, and me had been quiet vocal about how easily they disregarded TeaLeaf’s capture.
“But how did he find someone so quick?” Jag tugged TeaLeaf a bit closer.
“I’m sure Rone and him had a contingency plan. It would’ve been stupid not to have. I assume they never thought they’d have to use it, but . . .” When in battle, small or large, you always account for screw-ups. “The Captain Stone I met was well educated in the use of Fawn Magic and most likely tapped into everyone’s mind and wiped the image of the real Captain Stone from their minds.” Wasn’t a hard feat to accomplish if you had a large source, and Dav Community did
“So who is this fake Captain Stone? Besides an El Reaper. Does he work for the Spirit Council? If so, what is his goal? Is he in our database? If not is it because they changed his face? Deleted his record? Or does he work for someone else? If so, who is our unknown enemy?”
Jag was out of breath by the time he finished delivering his tirade of questions and I had no answers for him. Thankfully, Sham had discovered a few for him.
Sham shot a projection of the man I’d met the other day. “Let me introduce you to Larry Strife, aka Devil Man.”
“That not . . . I know him. That’s not him.” I stood and moved to the projected imagine. “Devil Man was a major player for the Spirit Council, but he despised their blatant disregard for the well-being of the supernatural creatures rescued.”
“He did. Still does, but he like most El Reapers, he’ll do anything for his son.”
TeaLeaf sprang to his feet. “That rat bastard is the real Captain Stone’s father?”
“Yep.” Sham flipped another photo onto the screen where the two men stood side by side wearing army suits sporting the encircled rose emblem of the Spirit Council. “They were one of the first father and son teams to battle. His son was discharged before the hardcore Gutting battles began.”
“That seems unlikely?” I pursed my lips. “Spirit Council don’t let legends step aside. A first father and son team would be a gold mind for recruiting. They dug him in deeper. So damn deep they changed his entire appearance and I’d bet erased his file in their system.” I shot my eyes towards Sham.
“That they did, but I have all their original files.” Sham gave them all a coy smile. “Too many hours to fill during recovery time.”
I laughed and looked at TeaLeaf. “Do you know how Rone might have met him?”
“No. My attention was more focused on work and when I was home I spent most of my time avoiding her.”
The bed squeaked as Beau sat up and rubbed his eyes. “So is the people responsible for my fucked up life the Spirit Council?”
I exchanged looks with the two amigos and then Sham. None of us was one hundred percent sure. There was no hardcore evidence, but that appeared to be the case.
“Can we at least say that’s the most likely the case?” Beau made his way over to me and sat on my lap.
“Safe assumption.” I said.
“Okay, then why?” Beau wiggled into a more comfortable position making my cock come to life.
